How a cat's body works
A cat's spine is very flexible and its shoulder blades are loosely attached, so it can twist, squeeze through gaps and land softly. Most cats can pull their claws back inside their paws, which keeps the tips sharp and lets them walk almost silently.

Cats began living alongside people thousands of years ago in the Near East, where grain stores attracted mice. Over time they spread with farmers, traders and sailors to almost every part of the world.
