How a dog's nose works

A dog's nose has far more smell receptors than ours, and part of the air it breathes in is sent to a separate smelling area instead of to the lungs. That is why a dog can pick one scent out of a busy mixture, and why dogs are trained to find lost people, ripe crops and hidden objects.

Dogs and people

Dogs were the first animals people lived with, domesticated from wolves at least 15,000 years ago. Different jobs — herding sheep, guarding homes, hunting, pulling sleds and keeping people company — shaped the many breeds we know today.

Fun facts

  • A dog's nose has around 300 million smell receptors; a human nose has about six million.
  • Dogs hear much higher pitches than people do, which is why a 'silent' dog whistle still works.
  • Puppies are born deaf and blind, and start to see and hear at about two to three weeks old.
  • Dogs cool down mainly by panting, because they only sweat through their paw pads.
  • Every dog's nose print is different, a little like a human fingerprint.
