A dog's nose has far more smell receptors than ours, and part of the air it breathes in is sent to a separate smelling area instead of to the lungs. That is why a dog can pick one scent out of a busy mixture, and why dogs are trained to find lost people, ripe crops and hidden objects.
Dogs were the first animals people lived with, domesticated from wolves at least 15,000 years ago. Different jobs — herding sheep, guarding homes, hunting, pulling sleds and keeping people company — shaped the many breeds we know today.
