A small head on a big body
Stegosaurus had a long body but a small, narrow head with a beak and small teeth. It fed on low-growing plants rather than reaching up into trees.
About the Stegosaurus
Stegosaurus was a plant-eating dinosaur from the Late Jurassic of North America, around 155 to 145 million years ago. It is easy to recognise from the two rows of tall bony plates running along its back and the spikes at the end of its tail.

- The name Stegosaurus means “roof lizard”.
- It had four spikes on the end of its tail.
- The plates on its back sat in the skin, not on the bones.
- Its head and brain were small compared with the rest of its body.
- What the back plates were for is still debated by scientists.
