Learn While You Color: Stegosaurus

About the Stegosaurus

Stegosaurus was a plant-eating dinosaur from the Late Jurassic of North America, around 155 to 145 million years ago. It is easy to recognise from the two rows of tall bony plates running along its back and the spikes at the end of its tail.

Plates and spikes

The plates were not joined to the skeleton — they sat in the skin. Scientists still debate what they were for: display, helping control body temperature, or both. The four tail spikes are a clearer story, and fossil evidence suggests they were used in defence.

A small head on a big body

Stegosaurus had a long body but a small, narrow head with a beak and small teeth. It fed on low-growing plants rather than reaching up into trees.
