The four layers
The crust is the thin rocky surface we live on. Below it the mantle is hot rock that flows very slowly, like cold treacle. The outer core is liquid metal, and its motion creates Earth's magnetic field. The inner core is solid iron and nickel, squeezed so hard by the weight above it that it cannot melt.
Three kinds of rock
Igneous rock cools from molten magma. Sedimentary rock is built from layers of sand, mud and shell pressed together over long periods — this is where most fossils are found. Metamorphic rock is either kind changed by heat and pressure into something new.
How a fossil forms
An animal is buried quickly by mud or sand. Over thousands of years the soft parts rot away while minerals seep into the hard parts, slowly turning them to stone. That is why fossils are usually shells, bones and teeth rather than skin or leaves.

- What age is the Earth layers sheet for?
- It suits roughly ages seven to twelve, and pairs well with a first geology or plate tectonics lesson.
- Can I print these for a whole class?
- Yes. Teachers, childminders and homeschooling parents may print as many copies as they need for their own children. Selling the files or reposting them elsewhere online is not permitted.
- What paper should I print on?
- Plain 80–120 gsm US Letter or A4 paper works for crayons and coloured pencils. Choose 'Fit to page' in your print dialog. If your child uses felt tips or paint, step up to 160 gsm card so the colour does not bleed through.
