Weather is one of the few science topics a child can check by looking out of the window. Storms in particular tend to produce a mixture of excitement and worry, and explaining how they work is usually the fastest way to settle the worry.

How a thunderstorm forms
Warm, damp air rises. As it climbs it cools, and the water vapour in it condenses into a tall cloud. Inside that cloud, ice and water droplets crash together and build up electrical charge. Lightning is that charge jumping, and thunder is the sound of air exploding outwards along the lightning's path.
Why we see lightning before we hear thunder
Light travels much faster than sound. Counting the seconds between the flash and the rumble and dividing by three gives roughly the distance in kilometres — a small piece of maths children genuinely enjoy doing.
Staying safe in a storm
The advice is simple: go indoors, stay away from tall lone trees and open fields, and wait about thirty minutes after the last thunder before going back out. Talking through a plan calmly before a storm arrives helps children feel prepared rather than scared.
