Insects are the easiest wildlife for a child to find. A garden, a verge or a crack in a pavement will produce beetles, ants and hoverflies within minutes, and a butterfly is often the first wild animal a child watches closely on purpose.
This starter set contains a large butterfly with matching patterned wings, and a Learn & Color life cycle sheet running from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to adult. The butterfly page is a natural symmetry exercise: colour one wing, then match the other.

What makes an insect an insect
An insect has six legs, three body parts — head, thorax and abdomen — and usually a pair of antennae. Spiders have eight legs and two body parts, so they are not insects. Counting legs is the quickest test a child can apply in the garden.
Complete metamorphosis
A butterfly changes shape completely during its life. The egg hatches into a caterpillar whose only job is eating. It then forms a chrysalis, inside which its body is rebuilt, and emerges as a winged adult that drinks nectar. Beetles, bees and flies change in the same four-stage way.
Why pollinators matter
When a butterfly or bee drinks nectar, pollen sticks to its body and travels to the next flower. That is how many plants make seeds. Roughly a third of the food on our plates depends on animal pollination, which is why leaving flowering plants for insects is worth doing.

- What paper should I print on?
- Plain 80–120 gsm US Letter or A4 paper works for crayons and coloured pencils. Choose 'Fit to page' in your print dialog. If your child uses felt tips or paint, step up to 160 gsm card so the colour does not bleed through.
