A large predator
Great white sharks are among the largest predatory fish in the ocean. Adults are commonly reported at around 4 to 6 metres long, and their diet changes as they grow, from fish and squid when younger to larger prey including marine mammals when mature.
Sensing the water
The tiny dots on a great white's snout are sensory pores. They belong to a system that can detect very weak electric fields produced by living animals nearby.

- Is the great white the biggest shark?
- No. The whale shark is much larger and is the largest living fish. The great white is one of the largest predatory sharks, which is not the same thing.
- Are great white sharks dangerous to people?
- Great whites are large wild animals and should always be respected, but encounters with people are uncommon compared with the enormous number of people who swim in the ocean every year.
