Where it lived
Pteranodon fossils come mostly from rocks in Kansas, USA, that formed at the bottom of a shallow sea about 86 to 84 million years ago. That setting, and its long toothless beak, suggest it fed on fish.
Pteranodon was not a dinosaur
Pteranodon was a pterosaur — a flying reptile. Pterosaurs were close relatives of dinosaurs, but they belong to their own group. Whenever you see a prehistoric animal flying on leathery wings, it is a pterosaur rather than a dinosaur.

- Pteranodon was a flying reptile, not a dinosaur.
- Its name means “wing without tooth” — it had no teeth at all.
- Big individuals had wings around six metres across.
