Learn While You Color: Pteranodon

Pteranodon was not a dinosaur

Pteranodon was a pterosaur — a flying reptile. Pterosaurs were close relatives of dinosaurs, but they belong to their own group. Whenever you see a prehistoric animal flying on leathery wings, it is a pterosaur rather than a dinosaur.

Built for flying

Its wings were skin stretched from an extremely long fourth finger to its body. Its bones were hollow and thin-walled, which kept it light. Large individuals had a wingspan of around six metres.

Where it lived

Pteranodon fossils come mostly from rocks in Kansas, USA, that formed at the bottom of a shallow sea about 86 to 84 million years ago. That setting, and its long toothless beak, suggest it fed on fish.
