What the horns were for
Scientists are still working this out. The horns and frill may have helped Triceratops defend itself, or been used for display between members of the same species, or both. Fossil frills with healed injuries suggest they were used in some kind of contest.
About the Triceratops
Triceratops was a large plant-eating dinosaur with two long brow horns, a shorter nose horn and a wide frill of bone behind its head. It lived in western North America at the end of the Cretaceous Period, at the same time and in the same places as Tyrannosaurus rex.
Fun facts
- The name Triceratops means “three-horned face”.
- Its skull is one of the largest of any land animal ever found.
- It snipped plants with a beak, a bit like a parrot’s.
- Triceratops lived alongside Tyrannosaurus rex.
- Whether the frill was mainly for defence or display is still debated.
