How Triceratops ate
At the front of its mouth Triceratops had a sharp beak for snipping tough plants. Behind the beak sat rows of teeth packed tightly together, which sliced plant food as the jaws closed. Worn teeth were replaced throughout its life.
About the Triceratops
Triceratops was a large plant-eating dinosaur with two long brow horns, a shorter nose horn and a wide frill of bone behind its head. It lived in western North America at the end of the Cretaceous Period, at the same time and in the same places as Tyrannosaurus rex.
Fun facts
- The name Triceratops means “three-horned face”.
- Its skull is one of the largest of any land animal ever found.
- It snipped plants with a beak, a bit like a parrot’s.
- Triceratops lived alongside Tyrannosaurus rex.
- Whether the frill was mainly for defence or display is still debated.
