The famous claw
Each foot carried one large curved claw on the second toe, held up off the ground while the animal walked. Scientists think it was used to grip, rather than to slash.
About the Velociraptor
Velociraptor was a small, fast meat-eating dinosaur that lived in what is now Mongolia and northern China, around 75 to 71 million years ago. Including its long stiff tail it measured about two metres from nose to tail tip, and it stood roughly knee-high to an adult person.
Fun facts
- A real Velociraptor was about the size of a large turkey.
- Quill knobs on its arm bones show it had feathers.
- It lived in a dry, sandy landscape with dunes.
- One remarkable fossil preserves a Velociraptor and a Protoceratops buried together.
- The name means “swift thief”.
