How to Print Coloring Pages: Paper, Settings and Fixes

Printing a coloring page should take thirty seconds. This guide covers the paper and settings that give you crisp black lines every time, plus fixes for the problems parents ask about most.

1. Open the print-ready PDF

On DoodleLearn, click any coloring picture and a print-ready PDF opens in a new tab. Every sheet is sized for standard letter or A4 paper, so there is nothing to resize.

2. Choose your paper

Plain printer paper (around 80 gsm) is fine for crayons and colored pencils. If your child loves markers, use a slightly heavier paper (120 gsm or cardstock) so the ink doesn't soak through.

3. Check the printer settings

Set the print dialog to 'Fit to page' or 100% scale, portrait orientation, and black-and-white or grayscale printing. Grayscale keeps the outlines crisp and saves color ink.

4. Print a test page first

Print one page before printing a whole stack. Check that the lines are dark and the whole picture fits with a small white margin around the edges.

Common printing problems — and quick fixes

The lines look faded or grey

Switch the print quality from 'Draft' to 'Normal' or 'Best', and make sure grayscale or black-only printing is selected.

Part of the picture is cut off

Choose 'Fit to printable area' or 'Shrink to fit' in the print dialog. Some printers can't print right to the edge of the paper.

Marker ink bleeds through the page

Use heavier paper, or slide a scrap sheet underneath. Water-based washable markers bleed less than permanent ones.

The PDF won't open

Try a different browser (Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox all open PDFs), or download the file and open it with your device's built-in PDF viewer.

Common questions

What paper size do coloring pages use?

DoodleLearn sheets are designed for US Letter and also fit A4. Use 'Fit to page' if your printer uses a different size.

Can I print coloring pages at school or a library?

Yes. DoodleLearn pages are free to print for home and classroom use. Libraries and copy shops can print the PDFs too.

Do I need a color printer?

No. Coloring pages are black line art on white, so a black-and-white printer is perfect and cheaper to run.

How do I save paper?

Print only the pages your child picks, and keep finished sheets for crafts — they make great cards, placemats and fridge art.
