Every dinosaur hatched from an egg. Even the largest long-necked dinosaurs began life small enough to hold, then grew quickly. Fossils of young dinosaurs are rarer than adults because small bones are fragile and are easily destroyed before they can fossilise.
Scientists can study growth by cutting thin slices of fossil bone and counting the rings inside, a bit like tree rings. Those rings show that some dinosaurs grew very fast during their teenage years.
Some fossils suggest dinosaur parents cared for their nests. Fossils of the dinosaur Citipati have been found sitting over their eggs in a brooding pose, much like a bird on a nest.
