About the Spinosaurus

Spinosaurus was a very large meat-eating dinosaur that lived in North Africa around 99 to 93 million years ago. It had long narrow jaws, cone-shaped teeth, and a tall sail made of bony spines growing from its backbone.

A fish eater

The shape of its jaws and teeth is much closer to a fish-catching animal than to a bone-crunching hunter like Tyrannosaurus. Fossils are found in rocks that formed in rivers and swamps, which fits an animal that spent a lot of time near water.

A dinosaur scientists are still studying

The first good Spinosaurus fossils were destroyed in Munich during the Second World War, so research had to start again from newer finds. How much time Spinosaurus spent swimming is actively debated, and new fossils keep changing the picture.
